The town of Guadalest is unique as the old town centre is on
the top of a rock outcrop, which can only be accessed via a tunnel hollowed
into the side of the rock.
This famous fortress was built by the Moors some 1,300 years ago. Then the
town was only accessible through a 15 meter long, man made, tunnel through solid
rock. The tunnel called the ‘Portal de San José’ is still
the only way into the town
